Why You’ll Get Addicted to Skydiving

Skydiving: for many of us, it’s the ultimate high. We can’t wait to get to the dropzone; we think about it constantly; there’s no part of our lives it hasn’t touched. If that sounds a little nuts, don’t laugh–you’re next! And here’s why.

1. You’ll Be The Undisputed Star Of Facebook.

You can picture it, we’re sure: the mountain of likes overflowing your notifications. Okay, okay– maybe it’s a silly thing to get stoked about, but happiness is happiness, and all the high-fives are definitely a happy side effect!

We have to tell you, though–social stardom is the tiniest little tip of the iceberg, as far as benefits are concerned. It’s definitely not what you’re going to get addicted to.

2. The Empowerment Quotient Is Sky-high.

Once you’ve jumped out the door of an aircraft, you’ll never be the same again. The clarity, peace and freedom–the expansiveness–you experience up there is second to none. For a few short minutes, every irritant and challenge and frustration and responsibility in your life is 13,500 feet below you. You feel giddily in charge of your own destiny up there…and guess what? It sticks.

People report that a skydive initiates a change in their perspective that goes deeper and lasts longer than they ever thought it would. After all: if you’re capable of jumping out of an airplane with a great big smile on your face, what can’t you do?

But that’s not all there is to get hooked on, either, if we’re being honest.

3. This Particular Flavor Of Happiness Is Like Nothing You’ve Ever Tasted Before.

This is going to sound a little hard to believe, but here it is: Neurologically, the kind of happiness you’ll experience after making your successful skydive is an exhilarating, intoxicating mix. It takes the nervousness you feel before the jump–the nervousness everybody feels, so don’t for a moment think you’re alone–and changes it on the molecular level into an explosive sense of boundless possibility.

This is powerful stuff, and it often catches people off-guard. We’ve seen people burst into happy tears in the landing area. We’ve seen people who seem physically unable to stop whooping and high-fiving everybody around them. And we’ve seen lots of people walk straight in from their first tandem skydive to sign up for a solo freefall course.

But happiness isn’t everything, is it? Not even neurologically magical happiness. What lies beyond happiness is the real reason people get addicted to this sport, and it might surprise you.

4. Skydiving is a Legit Lifestyle.

Here’s the secret most people don’t know: Skydiving isn’t just about jumping out of a plane. It’s as much about jumping out of a plane as surfing is about standing on a board in the waves; as yoga is about doing stretches on a sticky mat; as capeoria is about kicking people very slowly while standing on your head. Skydiving, like those other examples, is as much a way of life as it is a sport. It has a language and a philosophy and a community that welcomes each other with open arms. It’s a worldwide family.

People get addicted to skydiving because of that community more than they get addicted to the feeling of being unimpeachably awesome; more than the trophies they earn from winning huge international skydiving competitions (seriously, Google it); from the rush of freefall, which truly never gets old.

That sounds good, doesn’t it?

There’s only one way to find out if you’ll like it–and you can feel free to blame us if you get hooked. We see it coming a mile away.
